Royal baby: Celebrities react to Harry and Meghan’s new son

"As every father and parent will ever say your baby is absolutely fantastic, but this little thing is absolutely to-die-for". But this little thing is, is absolutely to die for. Among the British upper classes, "pregnancy was just very discreet" until the 1960s, says Ingrid Seward, author of My Husband and I: The Inside Story of 70 Years of the Royal Marriage.

The attempt appeared to only generate even more interest from the tabloids, which published screaming headlines about unconfirmed details on how the 7 pound, 3 ounce (3.26-kilogramme) came into the world.

Queen Elizabeth's grandson, Prince Harry, 34, and US-born former actress Meghan Markle, 37, married in a lavish ceremony at the monarch's Windsor Castle home in May a year ago.

The women's rights campaigner has been hailed as a breath of fresh air in a stuffy institution.

Harry, the 34-year-old son of Prince Charles, said he was present at the birth.

Harry and William were also born in the same hospital.

Buckingham Palace said minutes before 2 p.m. that Meghan had gone into labor (in fact the baby had already been born) and Harry emerged less than an hour later to announce the birth in person.

The infant is seventh in line to the British throne and Queen Elizabeth II's eighth great-grandchild.

Prince Harry couldn't help but beam as he revealed he became a first-time dad on Monday morning.

Harry was left overjoyed by wife Meghan giving birth to their son, and could hardly contain his joy and excitement at the arrival of his child when he gave a live television statement.

She wrote that they bonded over "biryani, poutine and endless conversations" and added: "Meghan, standing shoulder to shoulder with Harry, will be a princess for the people".

The Duchess of Sussex was reportedly secretly taken to a private hospital to gave birth, despite planning on a home delivery. "Wishing you all the best at this happy time".

As congratulatory messages flood in from all over the world, questions have turned to the baby's name and his title.

Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury who married the couple last May, also shared his joy on social media.

Priyanka Chopra also added a heart GIF to her story, showing her vast love for her friend and the new-born baby.

When was the baby due?

But in recent weeks, speculation mounted that Meghan would chose a home birth.

In announcing the birth to reporters in Windsor, Harry said the child was a "bit overdue", and that had given them more time to contemplate names.

The couple are yet to announce a name.

A thrilled Harry, speaking on camera at Windsor Castle's Royal Mews, revealed that Meghan had given birth early yesterday morning and it was the "most awesome experience I could ever have possibly imagined".
