Thiem rides out hard start to ease to Barcelona Open victory

Thiem told reporters: "Rafa is always the biggest favourite for every clay court title".

Thiem had lost to Nadal in the Barcelona final two years ago.

Thiem is the first Austrian to win in Barcelona since Thomas Muster (1995, 96).

Medvedev struggled to respond and called on the physio to get some treatment on his shoulder but that intervention failed to get him going and Thiem easily served out for the set.

After wrapping up his first Masters 1000 title at Indian Wells against Roger Federer, Thiem really announced himself to the tennis world.

What was interesting in the aftermath of his triumph in Barcelona, was that Thiem has given little thought to the French Open, as he said: "Paris is still pretty far away, I'm happy with my clay form right now, this is actually my biggest clay title - this one here". In Thiem's case, claiming a victory over Nadal in the Barcelona Open semi-final proves he is not daunted by the undisputed "King of Clay".

The 14th-ranked Medvedev, coming off a semifinal appearance in Monte Carlo, was playing in his first clay court final.

Thiem stunned tournament favorite Rafael Nadal on Saturday, and this afternoon fell behind 3-0 but then reeled off won 12 of the last 13 games to win his 13th career title and 9th on the clay.

"I tried my best, but Dominic was too good today", Medvedev said. "But the special thing about tennis is that I'll start from zero in Madrid".

"It was tougher at the beginning of the week when I played my first and second match".

"Congratulations Petra, you are a real role model", said Kontaveit. However, the Estonian, who received a walkover into the final after top seed Naomi Osaka pulled out from their last four clash due to injury, missed her chances and allowed Kvitova to come back. The Czech had to work much harder in the second set as she had to save two set points at 5-4 as Kontaveit had her pinned to the baseline.

"I need to train well and get used to the conditions".
