Angela Merkel seen shaking for second time in just over a week

German Chancellor Angela Merkel was seen shaking again in public on Thursday, but her spokesman insisted she was fine, The New York Times is reporting.

Standing alongside German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier at Schloss Bellevue, she began to tremble while clasping her arms in front of her. Merkel said afterward that she was fine after drinking three glasses of water, which she "apparently needed". "The federal chancellor is fine", spokesman Steffen Seibert said.

She was offered a glass of water, but did not drink it - despite blaming the previous incident on dehydration.

There are fears over the health of German Chancellor Angela Merkel after distressing footage shows her violently shaking for the second time this month.

The latest incident came hours before Merkel was due to board a plane for the Group of 20 summit in Osaka, Japan.

Germany is now in the grips of a heat wave that has seen scorching temperatures across the country, although the weather cooled off slightly last night in Berlin.

The shaking went on for two minutes, according to a DPA photographer who was present at the event.

On Tuesday last week, Merkel's whole body shook as she stood outside in hot weather alongside Ukraine's president.

She has a reputation for remarkable stamina - during intensive late-night discussions at European Union summits, for example.

Another government official told Reuters that while Merkel attributed the tremors on June 18 to drinking too little water and too much coffee on a hot day, Thursday's episode was more a psychological issue as she tried desperately to avoid a repeat.

Last year, she said she won't seek a fifth term as chancellor and won't seek any other political office after her current term ends in 2021.

Merkel has rarely had to cut back her work schedule significantly - though she did so for a few weeks in 2014 when she cracked her pelvis while cross-country skiing in Switzerland during a winter vacation.
