2 dead, officer hurt following shooting at Mississippi Walmart

A gunman accused of opening fire inside a northern Mississippi Walmart on Tuesday - leaving two dead and a police officer injured - was shot and taken into police custody, officials said.

Two people, both understood to be employees, were found dead, one inside the store and one in a parking lot, according to Fox13.

The suspected shooter was shot by a Southaven officer and was hospitalized in unknown condition, DeSoto County Sheriff Bill Rasco told WATN. It was not immediately clear why they required medical attention.

WREG's Jerrita Patterson has been on the scene since we learned of the incident and was told that someone may have been shot by a disgruntled employee. Legan was shot dead by police officers who were working at the festival. "He knew what he was doing when he came in there". "I saw at least one cop running in the store with a rifle". "It was an ugly scene", he said. Nicholas Gales, Brando Gales's brother, said Brandon Gales was a father of four.

Moore said Southaven Police Department and Southaven Fire Department underwent active shooter training two weeks ago, and he said that training helped save lives.

One employee, Carlos Odom, told CNN, "I heard a bunch of gunshots". "Pow. Pow. Pow. Pow". "After that, it stopped".

He killed two people before people arrived and engaged him in gunfire.

"I just thought 'Run!' and ran to my auto". "It's just hard to believe what happened here". And the motive for the shooting remains a mystery.

The Walmart is "still an active scene", Moore said, and a suspicious package was also found inside the store. He was transported to a nearby hospital and is expected to be OK. Some were seen praying in a circle.

Walmart issued a statement offering condolences to the victims and their families.

The company is relieved the suspect was apprehended, and appreciates the quick response by authorities and its employees, Foran said.
