Johnson's fresh-idea cupboard to fulfill for first time

Some commentators see in the makeup of Johnson's new team a Cabinet that is battle-ready for a general election, if the prime minister is blocked by Parliament from leaving the European Union without a deal.

Scottish Secretary David Mundell, who has left his living after four years, joked whether or no longer there would be "room" on the backbenches despite everything the dismissals.

Among the biggest gainers from the latest political upheaval is Indian-origin politician Priti Patel, who was named home secretary. Patel also held a position in David Cameron's majority government as an employment minister.

May's secretaries in defense, business, education, transport, local government and worldwide trade have all announced they are leaving government.

Javid's old job as home secretary was taken by Brexit supporter Priti Patel, who resigned as worldwide development secretary in May's government in November 2017 because she had held meetings with officials in Israel without informing Cabinet colleagues.

Sajid Javid is the first ethnic minority politician to be appointed at the post of Chancellor of the Exchequer.

Javid is being seen as a good choice by Tory MPs for Chancellor.

Liz Truss, who acted as a policy tsar to Johnson during the campaign, becomes the new worldwide trade secretary, and Brexiteer Theresa Villiers returns to the Cabinet as environment secretary.

Javid said he was "deeply honoured to be appointed Chancellor" and tweeted: "Looking forward to working with @hmtreasury to prepare for leaving the European Union, unifying our country and priming our economy for the incredible opportunities that lie ahead".

More than half of Theresa May's old cabinet, including leadership rival Jeremy Hunt, quit or were sacked. She'll be betting on Johnson to follow through.

Grant Shapps becomes transport secretary, having helped organise Johnson's campaign. She has been replaced by Ben Wallace, a former soldier and longstanding ally of Mr Johnson's.

Liz Truss strikes from 2d in relate on the Treasury to head the Division for Global switch while Steve Barclay has been re-appointed as Brexit Secretary. Another former Treasury minister, Robert Jenrick, assumes oversight of housing.

Earlier in the day, both Finance minister Philip Hammond and Justice Secretary and Lord Chancellor David Gauke resigned from their respective posts.

Within two hours of Mr Johnson entering Number 10, almost three quarters of the Cabinet had either resigned or been sacked in the bloodiest Cabinet reshuffle in modern political history.

There have also been a few changes in the departments which interact with the devolved administrations.

Secretary of State for Business, Innovation, and Skills from 11 May 2015 to 13 July 2016.

The Secretary of State for Northern Ireland has been replaced by Julian Smith. Alun Cairns takes the reigns as Welsh Secretary.

The group said it tried to hand him a 134-point manifesto listing actions to stop a "catastrophic climate breakdown" including scrapping plans for a new runway at London's Heathrow Airport and calling for action to achieve net zero emissions.

However, there has been some continuity from the previous Government with several high profile government ministers retaining their current jobs.

Evans commented: "I'm pleased Amber Rudd has been re-appointed as Work and Pensions Secretary with lead ministerial responsibility for equalities".

Johnson was on Tuesday chosen to be leader of the governing Conservative party by its members, and was confirmed prime minister in a meeting on Wednesday with Queen Elizabeth II. The same privileges were extended to media favourite Jacob Rees-Mog, as Commons leader.
