Lok Sabha Speaker lauds Indian scientists for Chandrayaan-2

Lok Sabha Speaker lauds Indian scientists for Chandrayaan-2

It has been reported that the budget of ISRO is less than 20 times that of USA's NASA.

The launcher of Chandrayaan-2, nicknamed "Bahubali", measured 44metres in height.

In the hours leading up to the launch, ISRO has been posting regular updates about the rocket's fuelling on Twitter.

"The technical snag we had observed on July 15 has been corrected". The vehicle is in good health.

The agency tweeted on Saturday that a rehearsal for the launch was completed successfully.

The "Baahubali" rocket carried the 3.8-tonne Chandrayaan 2 rocket which has three modules namely Orbiter, Lander (Vikram) and Rover (Pragyan).

"We are going to experience 15 minutes of terror, to ensure that the landing is done safely near the south pole", he told reporters, describing the final moments before the craft is expected to touch down on the moon, about 47 days from now. At 2.43 pm on Monday, the spacecraft is expected to embark on a 3.84-lakh-km journey onboard India's heaviest rocket GSLV-Mk III, nicknamed Bahubali.

He joined ISRO in 2001, and over the years his hard work and dedication has made him a key scientist in this prestigious mission.

After the successful launch, ISRO Chief K Sivan said he is extremely happy to announce that the GSLVMkIII-M1 successfully injected Chandrayaan 2 spacecraft into Earth Orbit. "Later, thrusters on board will enable descent of the spacecraft into a lunar orbit - the lander will detach from the orbiter and choose a right spot for landing even as it applies brakes to soften the landing", officials added.

Last week's attempt saw countdown halted 56 minutes before launch due to a "technical snag".

The liftoff marks India's bid to become only the fourth nation to land a spacecraft on the moon. But we are prepared to witness India's most challenging Moon mission lift up.

A Laser Retroreflector Array (LRA) of United States space agency NASA is among the payloads and is aimed at understanding dynamics of Earth's Moon system and deriving clues on Lunar interior.

Chandrayaan-2 is India's second lunar mission following Chandrayaan 1 in 2008.

He also referred to the fact that ISRO had not rescheduled the moon landing despite the one-week gap. The glitch had occurred when liquid propellant was being loaded into the rocket's indigenous cryogenic upper stage engine.

Veteran scientists heaped praise on ISRO for calling off the launch rather hurrying into a major disaster.

President Ram Nath Kovind watched the launch alongside 7,000 dignitaries and flag-waving children, with the crowd bursting into cheers at the spectacle.

This is the first Indian lunar mission to land on Moon which was led by two women - mission director Ritu Karidhal and the project director Muthayya Vanitha. The primary goal is to assess the lunar environment and attempt to map potential deposits of water ice on the Moon.
