Matthijs de Ligt signs for Juventus from Ajax on five-year deal

Juventus have completed the signing of Matthijs de Ligt from Ajax for €75 million making him the most expensive defender in Serie A history.

De Ligt, then 17, contested the Europa League final in his inaugural season as a first-team member and went on to become club captain, full worldwide and Eredivisie champion.

It appeared at various points in the summer each side was close to signing him but it is the Italian giants who win this rat race.

De Ligt will be joined at Juventus by Wales midfielder Aaron Ramsey, who has linked up with his new team-mates for the first time in recent days after his free transfer from Arsenal.

De Ligt is finally expected to put pen to paper on Wednesday in a deal worth a reported €12 million a year for the teenager.

Strong both on the ground and in the air, De Ligt scored twice with headers in the Champions League last season - with only Ronaldo (four) managing more. For a defender it is important to come to Italy.

Although they came unstuck in a dramatic collapse against Tottenham, de Ligt starred throughout Ajax's unlikely run, netting the victor in the last-eight victory over Juventus.

De Ligt was confirmed as a Juventus player on Thursday morning after passing a medical.

After a disappointing 2018-2019 season, Real Madrid have strengthened with the acquisition of Belgian playmaker Eden Hazard from Chelsea for an initial 100 million euros, with another 34 million euros in potential add-ons.

The player also has a €150m (£134.8m) release clause which will start from the third year of his contract.
