Puerto Rico Governor: Island-Wide Strike on Monday, July 22

Many business owners chose to close shops and offices for the day, media reported.

While he said that he will not seek re-election in 2020, Rosselló did not step down.

In June, U.S. lawmakers backed legislation to boost disaster recovery efforts across the country, including in Puerto Rico. Even his own father, former governor Pedro Rossello, stepped down from positions within their pro-statehood New Progressive Party and disaffiliated himself from it in a severe blow to party members.

"I know that apologising is not enough", Rossello said in a video posted on Facebook. "I have also taken significant actions in the direction of helping vulnerable sectors in our population", he said.

On Sunday, hundreds of people gathered in front of the governor's residence, chanting slogans such as "They will not stop us" and holding signs that said "Ricky resign". "Only my work will help restore the trust of these sectors". "The mayor of San Juan, Puerto Rico is a horror show".

The publication on July 13 of sexist and homophobic chat messages between Rossello and top aides unleashed simmering resentment over his handling of devastating hurricanes in 2017, alleged corruption in his administration, and the island's bankruptcy process.

"The people of Puerto Rico are great". "Whoever wasn't sure about going to the march tomorrow has now made up their mind to go".

The president called himself "the best thing that ever happened to Puerto Rico" and added, "We did a great job in Puerto Rico".

Joyce Rivera-González is Puerto Rican and spoke at the rally.

"The U.S. gave Puerto Rico $92 billion and it's in the hands of awful and corrupt people..."

Protesters in San Juan had been calling for Rossello to resign for over a week, following the release of 889 pages of private Telegram exchanges.

Rossello ridiculed Puerto Rican pop star Ricky Martin for his homosexuality. "He should surrender power to new leaders", Isham Rodriguez, 36, said as he banged pots together while walking in Monday's protest march.
