"Tetris" is celebrating its 35th anniversary in 2019.

Remember Tetris? The arcade game where you have to match the shapes of falling objects to fit into the gaps of the objects below? "Add that layer to a game that's plenty capable of instilling tension on its own, and you've got a riveting experience that even at its worst is still a game very much worth playing".

Tetris Royale is made by developer N3TWORK and The Tetris Company.

Tetris Royale will come with a lot of different game modes.

The Nintendo Switch's surprising battle royale-like Tetris 99 is getting some competition.

The announcement of Tetris Royale did not reference Tetris 99 but the principle appears to be the same.

Tetris Royale will also feature daily and seasonal challenges, as well as customisations, power-ups and boosters that can be used in battle.

The Tetris Company has tapped N3TWORK to develop the game for iPhone, iPad, and Android devices. This game, however, comes with an expected twist: 100 people are completing in a competitive mode. Tetris fans can expect to see a Tetris Royale beta game arrive some time later this year, but it's unclear when the final game will launch in the app stores and whether it will be free to download.

Other recent Tetris adaptations include Puyo Puyo Tetris for Switch, PlayStation 4 and PC, and the synesthetic Tetris Effect for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation VR. A beta is also slated to be available by the end of this year.

Tetris as a whole celebrated its 35th anniversary on June 4.
