Trump congratulates U.S. on World Cup win despite confrontation with Rapinoe

Three-time champions United States of America, who have not finished third at any World Cup and go into the final as the overwhelming favourites, are coached by England-born Jill Ellis.

President Trump has said he would invite the team to Washington, win or lose.

Alex Morgan leads the team, and the Golden Boot race as the tournament's top scorer, with six goals.

"This team has captured (the locals) heart", said owner of Nine Irish Brothers, Jerry O'Bryan.

Soccer fans in France were clearly on Megan Rapinoe's side in her ongoing feud with the American president. "The USA is doing great". Fourth star. Back to back. And it's really interesting for me to watch on TV because on the game days, I feel similar to how I used to feel when I played just because I really still feel a kinship and a connection to the current team, even though it's been many years since I played. On Sunday the British shadow foreign secretary, Labour MP Emily Thornberry, congratulated her and took aim at Trump.

Rapinoe, one of only five survivors in the USA squad from the 2011 final defeat against Japan, used the press conference to hit out at Federation Internationale de Football Association for scheduling this year´s final on the same day as those of the men´s Copa America and CONCACAF Gold Cup, as well as urging the world game´s governing body to further increase prize money for the tournament in future.

Rapinoe is an outspoken champion of LGBTQ rights.

"It's not easy, especially in this generation of football where more and more teams are competitive". "Obviously not myself, not Ali Krieger, and I suspect not many, if any, of the other players, but I haven't spoken to every one of them about it". "It is long past time to pay them what they rightly deserve". These women are the best of what our country represents. "That shows you the kind of care [FIFA] has about the men's World Cup, considering all the issues that are happening there". The prize money for the 2022 men's World Cup in Qatar will be $440 million, according to news agency Associated Press.

"We are proud of the job we have done so far", said midfielder, Sherida Spitse. A round of applause for all the remarkable women in this tournament.

Rose Lavelle put the match out of reach, when she scored with a powerful left footed drive past the Dutch goalkeeper in the 69th minute. After the final whistle, Rapinoe said the win was "unbelievable".

"Everyone is fitter, they're playing better and if we do that more and more, in four years we can do well again". "We have all our friends and family here".

"In regards to the "President's" tweet today, I know women who you can not control or grope anger you, but I stand by @mPinoe & will sit this one out as well", Krieger, 34, wrote on Twitter. "We're insane and that's what makes us so special".
