People arrive at MacArthur Elementary looking for family and friends as the school is being used a re-unification center during the aftermath of a shooting at the Walmart near the Cielo Vista Mall, Saturday, Aug. 3, in El Paso, Texas.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott said the rampage appeared to be a hate crime, and police cited a "manifesto" they attributed to the suspect, a 21-year-old white man, as evidence that the bloodshed was racially motivated. The assailant was shot dead by police.

Other Democratic presidential candidates also responded with calls for gun control.

The popular band was scheduled to perform Sunday night at the Don Haskins Center at the University of Texas at El Paso, but have put the gig on hold in a show of support for the grieving community.

US President Donald Trump described the attack as "an act of cowardice".

The mass shooting in El Paso came less than a week after a gunman opened fire on a California food festival.

The massacre took place on Saturday at a Walmart store near the Cielo Vista Mall in the city of El Paso, a few miles from the US-Mexican border, the BBC reported.

Cory Brooker, senator for New Jersey, said on CNN's "State of the Union" that Trump was "responsible because he is stoking fears and hatred and bigotry".

Police said the 21-year-old suspect in custody was a resident of the Dallas-area city of Allen.

El Paso Police Chief Greg Allen said investigators were examining a "manifesto" from the suspect indicating "there is a potential nexus to a hate crime".

Adriana Quezada, 39, said she was in the women's clothing section of Walmart with her two children when the shooting happened.

The shooting in OH marked the 31st deadly mass shooting in America this year, defined as those where at least three people are killed by gun violence in a single episode.

The carnage ranked as the eighth-deadliest mass shooting in modern USA history, after a 1984 shooting in San Ysidro, California, that claimed 21 lives. Police later said they believed the suspect, who was armed with a rifle, was the only shooter.

Hoppus, the band's bassist and singer, said the El Paso hotel in which he was staying went under lockdown Saturday afternoon amid reports of a second active shooter that ultimately turned out to be a false alarm. "Certainly we are. But to think that this is just a gun issue that many people make it out to be is not right", Mr. Mulvaney said on ABC's "This Week".

The authorities did not disclose the shooter's identity. The following May, 10 were killed at a high school in Santa Fe. "It's not Texan", Abbott told reporters who asked about the document.

The suspected gunman, identified as 19-year-old Santino William Legan, legally purchased the AK-47-type assault rifle in Nevada on 9 July, according to authorities.
