Ewan McGregor to return as Obi-Wan Kenobi in Disney Plus series

Like a force spirit returning to give sage advice to a young Jedi, a rumor has cropped up that Ewan McGregor is returning to the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi for a new Disney+ series about the character.

While Cinelinx's sources could not confirm, the return of McGregor as Obi-Wan fits with previous rumors that additional live-action Star Wars series would join The Mandalorian and an untitled series based on Rogue One character Cassian Andor (Diego Luna), both coming to Disney+. Unfortunately, the dismal box office performance of Solo: A Star Wars Story put all the spinoff movies on hold.

The fandom is yearning for more; some just want a nonstop slew of content, others have been let down by the "Disney Era" of Star Wars, and there are those skeptical of what Disney Plus will deliver later this year with its first Star Wars series, The Mandalorian. Disney and Lucasfilm didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

After the stories of Jango and Boba Fett, another warrior emerges in the Star Wars universe. In almost every interview, McGregor has been asked whether he'll return, and he has been quick to share his enthusiasm about dawning his Jedi robes once more.

Stay tuned to Heroic Hollywood for more information on the upcoming Ewan McGregor Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney+ series. A few Star Wars novels and comics have explored Obi-Wan's life on Tatooine between Episodes III and IV. If this all shakes out, we'll probably hear a more official announcement at the D23 expo next week. A series set during Kenobi's decades-long exile on the desert planet could depict major events in Obi-Wan's fictional biography, such as his rematch against Darth Maul, who was reintroduced to the live-action Star Wars movies at the end of Solo.
