However, no specific product has been identified in all cases, nor has any product been conclusively linked to illnesses.

"Most patients reporting "vaping" (use of e-cigarette devices to aerosolize substances for installation) in the weeks and months prior to hospital admission", the ADPH alert noted, adding many had also acknowledged using products with THC, a chemical component in marijuana.

"We are seeing a tremendous increase in vaping among our youth, which is a public health crisis", said ODH Director Amy Acton, MD, MPH, in the news release. Those affected have had symptoms including cough, shortness of breath, and fatigue.

The Illinois Department of Public Health said in a news release that the patient, who was between 17 and 38 years old, had been hospitalized after falling ill following vaping, though it didn't give other information about the person, including the patient's name, hometown or date of death. Some also suffered vomiting and diarrhea. On Wednesday the CDC reported more than 149 possible cases of severe lung illness associated with e-cigarette product use were reported by 15 states.

In certain cases, symptoms worsened over days or weeks and required hospitalization.

The number of confirmed and possible cases in IL alone has doubled since last week - now at 22 people, with another 12 people being investigated. Even though cases appear similar, it is not clear if these cases have a common cause or if they are different diseases with similar symptoms. The investigation is ongoing and more information will be shared as it is available.

Individuals who have recently vaped and are having difficulty breathing should seek medical attention immediately.

Wells mother and sister say he was a heavy e-cigarette user but the martial arts teacher and masseuse was otherwise healthy. They're all in their early to mid-20s and have had a history of vaping.
