Lue near deal to join Clippers' staff

Head Coach Doc Rivers of the LA Clippers and Head Coach Tyronn Lue of the Cleveland Cavaliers exchange handshakes prior to the game between the two teams on March 9, 2018 at STAPLES Center in Los Angeles, California. However, he won't be reuniting with LeBron James and the Lakers.

The Lakers went in a different direction at head coach, adding Frank Vogel and Jason Kidd to their staff.

Hiring Lue also would require a reorganization of the structure of the Clippers' coaching staff. League rules permit a maximum of three assistant coaches to sit in the bench's front row, next to the head coach. With Lue still on the market for other teams, the Clippers are preparing to sign him.

Former NBA player Kendrick Perkins thinks it will be a "scary sight" for the Los Angeles Lakers to see Tyronn Lue serve as an assistant coach for city rivals Los Angeles Clippers. Lue started under Rivers with the Boston Celtics in 2009 and learned from him, eventually following Rivers to 2013.

The two Los Angeles teams will also face one another on Christmas Day in what is set to be one of the most hotly anticipated rivalries in modern National Basketball Association.

Lue and Rivers have plenty of coaching experience together. Cleveland went 128-83 and won the 2016 National Basketball Association championship during his three-plus years as head coach.

The Clippers have had an offseason of meaningful acquisitions with Kawhi Leonard and Paul George joining the team.
