Major League Baseball rumors: Top AL contender has inquired about Indians RHP Trevor Bauer

In the midst of a heated playoff race, the Cleveland Indians have traded right-hander Trevor Bauer to the Cincinnati Reds and received outfielders Yasiel Puig and Franmil Reyes as part of a three-team deal that includes the San Diego Padres. The Indians will receive outfielder Yasiel Puig as part of the deal, according to MLB Network's Jon Heyman, along with Padres outfielder Franmil Reyes and pitcher Logan Allen.

In his last season with the Indians, Bauer has recorded a 3.79 ERA over 24 starts with 185 strikeouts and 63 walks.

While neither team has yet to confirm the trade, Puig tweeted his thanks to the Reds, their fans and the city of Cincinnati.

Cleveland (62-44) is three games behind the Minnesota Twins in the American League Central and has a 2 ½-game cushion atop the wild-card standings.

In just his second big-league season, Reyes has flashed big-time power for the Padres with 27 home runs. In both cases, Bauer and Puig's it appears as the rest of the season will determine what happens next year with their new teams.

Reyes, a rising star for the Padres, broke through a year ago thanks to injuries to Will Myers and Hunter Renfroe, making four trips between San Diego and Triple-A El Paso but quickly proving his value at the plate down the stretch. Allen, 22, made his major league debut on June 18. It turned out he was not dealt. Unfortunately, in Trammell, they are giving up their top prospect and the No. 30 prospect in all of baseball. So that's kind of the idea.

Danny Salazar, an All-Star in 2016, will make his first start this season on Thursday as a "modified opener".

Bauer in under team control through 2020, so he isn't a rental, but he's also stumbled a bit this season.
