Multiple deaths at U.S. shopping mall in Texas

El Paso police tweeted Saturday that officers were responding to an active shooting scene and that people were advised to stay away from the Cielo Vista Mall area.

El Paso Mayor Dee Margo told CNN that three suspects were in custody.

The lieutenant governor did not say how numerous injuries were fatal.

Police in El Paso, Texas, say one person is in custody after a shooting a at a popular shopping mall and multiple people are injured or killed. "It is a tragedy, I'm just so torn up about it". Witnesses said Good Samaritans used their own cars to transport victims to hospitals.

"We don't want to do anything prematurely until we have accurate facts for you", Sergeant Robert Gomez said, declining to provide details on the injured.

Eleven victims were transported to the Del Sol Medical Center, hospital spokesman Victor Guerrero said.

USA gun watchdog the Public Safety Leadership Administration has confirmed that since the start of 2019 there have been 249 mass shootings in the US.

Initial reports warned of an active shooter near Cielo Vista Mall in Texas.

Jerrita Patterson shared an image of Walmart workers and customers holding hands in the parking lot and consoling each other.

USA Today also reported that a police department official confirmed the shooting took place at a Walmart.

Her daughter, 19, and son, 16, threw themselves in the ground, then ran out of the Walmart through an emergency exit.

"There is no luxury in this democracy of sitting this one out, whether it is gun violence, whether it is numerous issues we discuss today", O'Rourke said, adding, "It is on every single one of us to make this right".

"Please stay safe", she added.

Citing a law enforcement source, El Paso television station KTSM published on its website what it said were two photos of the suspect taken by security cameras as he entered the WalMart.

"They're just hidden away in the banquet room over there, and they're calling their loved ones, either trying to get a ride home or trying to get out of here", Loera said.

Beto O'Rourke, a former congressman from El Paso who is running for president, tweeted that news of the shooting was "heartbreaking".
