R. Kelly Pleads Not Guilty, Denied Bail in NY Federal Case

A judge there had denied him bail because he is considered a flight risk and a danger to the community.

The judge ordered that the singer remain in custody pending his trial.

Anton tried to visit Kelly early Friday, prior to his 10:30 a.m. arraignment.

He has consistently denied the claims.

He was arrested in Chicago last month on two separate federal grand jury indictments in IL and NY.

The feds also allege "Kelly and his crew traveled throughout the United States and overseas to recruit these women and girls".

They also accused Kelly of obstructing justice by using threats and bribes, including payments of hundreds of thousands of dollars, to keep his victims quiet.

Kelly's attorneys said in court filings the alleged victims sought out Kelly's attention, came to his shows and "pined to be with him".

Kelly is also accused of filming the sexual activity including that with alleged underage victims, which constitutes child pornography.

Kelly appeared at back-to-back hearings in federal court in Brooklyn Friday morning.

"I have spent the hours that followed his landing on the phone with the BOP at both New York MCC and Brooklyn MDC trying to locate my client, but no one would provide that information to me, even recognizing I am his attorney, instead directing me to bop.gov to find out where he would be", he wrote.

Kelly must attend a status hearing in the Midwestern city on September 4, having pleaded not guilty to that 13-count indictment.

The five-count indictment from the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York includes charges of racketeering and violations of the Mann Act, which "prohibits transporting people across state lines for the goal of prostitution", the New York Times previously reported.

Kelly's defense attorneys requested his release so he could better fight charges they have dismissed as "groupie remorse".

The singer faces a maximum prison sentence of over 200 years, according to Reuters.

He posted the $100,000 bond but was arrested and jailed again in March for failure to pay his ex-wife $161,000 in child support.

The singer has faced accusations of abuse, manipulation and inappropriate encounters with girls and young women for more than two decades.
