Taylor Swift not legally allowed to re-record her albums, says expert

Former Sony Music executive Seth Schachner on Taylor Swift speaking out over her concerns about a Scooter Braun-led holding company acquiring her former label Big Machine Records which owns the master recordings of her first six studio albums.

When asked in the interview if Swift would try to re-record her early music to regain control of her masters, the singer responded, "Oh yeah", according The Hollywood Reporter. I walked away because I knew once I signed that contract, Scott Borchetta would sell the label, thereby selling me and my future.

"Something that's very special to me about this album is it's the first one that I will own."
Swift's lawyer later clarified in a statement: "Scott Borchetta never gave Taylor Swift an opportunity to purchase her masters, or the label, outright with a check in the way he is now apparently doing for others". This is what happens when you sign a deal at fifteen to someone for whom the term "loyalty" is clearly just a contractual concept.

In a blog post at the time, Swift accused Braun of bullying and called his purchase of her back catalog the "worst case scenario". "I think it's important for artists to own their work". Swift expressed outrage, writing on Tumblr how she was "sad and grossed out" by the news.

If Swift goes ahead with it, she could subtly encourage her fans to buy her version over Braun's, essentially making the sale of her masters a pointless exercise and trumping a man who she alleges has had it out for her for years.

"Typically it's a period of five years, sometimes much more", said McPherson, noting that he was not familiar with the specifics of her contract with Big Machine.

"She didn't want to put up $300 million".

Swift is setting an example by exerting creative control over her work, and an empowering one at that.

Her stage was set with a massive and stunning flower wall, a floral printed floor and screen that buzzed to live with flowers and words from her songs in a rainbow of pastel tones.

Taylor Swift's fans were in for a huge surprise as they wait overnight in New York City!
