U.S. billionaire Jeffrey Epstein kills self in jail

Epstein, a financier with opulent homes, a private jet and access to elite circles, had been dogged for decades by accusations that he had paid dozens of girls for sexual acts in Florida.

The 66-year-old reportedly died by suicide in a NY jail.

The billionaire financier is suspected of running a massive network of sex trafficking in which he would trade underage girls.

Tartaglione was put in the SHU after guards allegedly found a cell phone in his old quarters.

The documents were released by the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan, as part of a defamation lawsuit by Virginia Giuffre, one of Epstein's accusers, against Ghislaine Maxwell, a longtime friend of Epstein.

Epstein was accused of paying underage girls hundreds of dollars in cash for massages and then sexually abusing them at various locations, including homes in Palm Beach, Florida, and NY from 2002 through 2005.

The FBI and the Department of Justice's Inspector General were opening investigations, U.S. Attorney General William Barr said, adding that he was "appalled" to learn of his death in federal custody.

At the time, Epstein was facing prosecution on allegations of sexually abusing dozens of girls between 1999 and 2007, directing others to abuse them and paying employees to bring victims to him, according to court filings.

If convicted, he would have faced a maximum of sentence of up to 45 years in prison, essentially the rest of his life.

Others involved in the effort to bring Epstein to justice said his death would not end their efforts to secure financial damages.

Epstein had denied the current charges against him.

Jeffrey Epstein has been discovered dead in jail where he had been held pending trial on federal sex trafficking charges.

Epstein is also accused of paying off possible co-conspirators to "influence" them, USA media have reported.

2007: A plea deal is struck with Alex Acosta, the United States attorney in Florida.

He socialized with princes and presidents and lived on a 100-acre private island in the Caribbean and one of the biggest mansions in NY.

After 28 female contestants were procured, he revealed that the other guests were just "him and Epstein", The New York Times reported.

In mid-July, then US Secretary of Labor Alexander Acosta resigned following pressure related to his time as a public prosecutor for the state of Florida.

He was often seen socialising with the rich and powerful, including President Donald Trump, former President Bill Clinton and the UK's Prince Andrew.

"We are hopeful that the government will continue to investigate and will focus on those who participated and facilitated Epstein's horrifying sex trafficking scheme that damaged so many".

But Epstein also enjoyed surrounding himself with much younger women, including Russian models who attended his cocktail parties and handsome women he flew aboard his plane, according to a 2003 Vanity Fair profile.
